Nick Zitto, ‘18, and Sean Duffy, ‘20, made their college decision within the past few weeks. The catcher and pitcher duo, respectively, have committed to Massachusetts Maritime in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Head coach Mike Kelly is very excited to have these players aboard his roster. “Nick Zitto is a very experienced catcher who I expect will do a great job keeping the young pitchers under control,” Kelly says. “He really knows what he’s doing back there and is willing to block any ball thrown his way.” Kelly also has encouraging expectations for the 6’3 205 pound RHP, Sean Duffy. “He has a lot of potential and good size, but his immaturity could get in his way down the road. If he can control his emotions, Duffy could see significant time as a freshman,” Kelly says. “He sits in the 74-87 mph range with his fastball, so expect him to attack hitters early and get ahead.”
Zitto will be a junior when Duffy arrives as a freshman, so it is possible that they will be able to be on the field again together for Massachusetts Maritime Academy (10-7), who is just coming off a big 10-3 win vs. Salem State. “I am really looking forward to playing with Nick again,” Duffy says about Zitto. “We are really good friends and our chemistry allows us to perform at a higher level.” Zitto feels similarly about Duffy. “In my opinion, Duffy is the best pitcher in the country. It is an honor for me to catch for him. He is probably my closest friend as well,” Zitto says. The chemistry between the duo is something that Coach Kelly expects to spark the Massachusetts Maritime pitching staff.
Kelly couldn’t be more excited to get both of these players on campus. His wife, Tammy couldn’t agree more. “I can’t wait for the next era of MMA baseball,” she says. “I have been waiting a long time for these highly coveted players to arrive on campus; especially Zitto. I will most certainly be peaking through the weight room doors to see his bulging biceps while he sacrifices himself for the betterment of the program.” There are big expectations down the road for the Buccanears with great recruiting classes on the way, lead by Zitto and Duffy. If they can get the right combination of talent and leadership, they could be able to compete for a championship ring.
