The North Carolina Schools Superintendent said today that last year's test scores statewide we're the lowest in the history of statewide testing. End of grade test scores for all grades ranked in the 28th percentile according to a state audit that took place during July and August of this year. This means that North Carolina's scores for all 1.1 million students who took the tests, were only better than the bottom 28 percent nationwide.
"We have a serious problem here in North Carolina, despite an increase in teacher pay, smaller classrooms, and more educational tools in the classrooms", said Superintendent Riley. "The only additional recourse to get our scores up are to extend the days at all schools in the state. Our kids need more time in the classroom, and more time for one-on-one instruction", he added.
Starting the first day of the second semester for High School students in the state, it will be mandatory for classroom instruction to begin at the regular times and end at 5:30pm. For Elementary and Middle school students, this will take effect on January 25th 2018.
Private Schools are not affected, as they are not state funded or controlled.
