Grenade explodes close to King Power store
By Doug Newhouse, 31 July 2010
A hand grenade hidden in a black plastic bag exploded close to the King Power (Thailand) downtown duty free shop in Bangkok's Rangnam Road shopping centre yesterday, leaving a male passer by who was sorting through rubbish critically injured.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the incident which is reported to have resulted in the loss of the victim's sight in his left eye, while he remains unconscious in hospital on a respiratory ventilator.
The Thai authorities are now investigating the incident and are said to have identified some aspects related to the incident which are similar to previous explosions which have taken place in the capital city on an ad-hoc basis since 2006. Investigators say that the grenade was of Chinese manufacture and not similar to any equipment used by the Thai army.
INDISCRIMINATE ACT
This latest incident - which does not appear to have targeted the King Power shop itself - follows the waves of violence seen in the capital between April and May following a two-month siege of Bangkok by anti-government protesters. An estimated 90 deaths occurred and more than 1,400 people were injured when police and the army finally moved in with army vehicles to disperse 'Red Shirt' demonstrators on May 19.
Many of the 'Red Shirt' protestors are supporters of the exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who have been calling for new elections in the country.
