Delhi T3 in low key opening - with glitches
By Doug Newhouse, 30 July 2010

Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 3 opened yesterday for a few international flights in somewhat low-key fashion, in contrast to the July 3 ceremony which was attended by dignitaries from the Indian Government and airport officials. The opening follows the two-week delay requested by airlines to get their back office logistics into place.

The first flight was an Air India arrival from Tokyo which touched down at 16.50 local time and this now marks the start of a four week period of international flights only, until domestic services are transferred to the new terminal.

Local press reported some glitches at the new facility, with some baggage reclaim delays and a minor problem with the airport's radar system. Malfunctioning conveyor belts and telephones and only partially stocked shops were all reported, along with problems experienced by some passengers in reaching the airport.

All of which was probably to be expected considering the size of the operation and the simple fact that there is still a lot of construction work taking place to complete the airport by the end of September, ahead of the October Commonwealth Games.

One of the problems with stocking the shops is that Delhi Duty Free's large walk through-style store also incorporates the main entrance to the airside, through which construction workers and equipment are still moving to and fro. This situation is expected to dissipate as more works are completed and the terminal's operations settle down.
