A fitting tribute to Michael Ashley Wynne
By Doug Newhouse, 27 July 2010
It is with great regret that The Travel Retail Business and TREND reports the tragic and untimely death of Michael Wynne, 74, on July 24, who was best known in the last decade for his Pinemesh Management UK travel retail agency, representing Silhouette International eyewear. Silhouette's Sales Director International Franz Waganeder described Michael - who was also a close personal friend - as 'one of the few and rare characters with enormous dedication and passion to work'.
For a man who learned how to ride a horse well at the age of 71, it is perhaps a tragic irony that Michael injured himself by falling down the stairs at his home in the middle of the night last week. He was only discovered by his loving wife Christine when the family's dogs awoke and alerted her to the fall.
Subsequently rushed to hospital in a coma, Christine said that he initially appeared to show signs of a recovery, but after being transferred to a private ward he slipped backwards, only for doctors to find extensive internal bleeding which they could not treat and from which he never recovered.
TRIBUTE FROM SILHOUETTE
In a message from Silhouette's Sales Director International and the Silhouette team, Franz Waganeder said it was with great sadness that they had learned of his death, describing Michael as a true friend and very loyal business partner.
"We have been working with Michael for over 10 years and have enjoyed every moment ever since. Michael has been one of the few and rare characters with enormous dedication and passion to work. But above all, he put friendship and emotion in front and we feel that we have lost a true friend and partner."
Doug Newhouse writes:
I also am very proud to have known Michael and to have counted him as a great friend over many, many years. We shared a mutual love of cricket and sport in general and the better aspects of the travel retail business and Michael's no-nonsense sense of right and wrong was just one enduring characteristic that I will always remember.
While I have actually known Christine even longer than Michael, he never stopped talking about the woman he loved so much during the 17-plus years that they were married. Despite his straight talking which was sometimes misread as assertive, he was also a very kind and caring man who tended to hide this part of this character from public view.
While his close family obviously saw this side of him, many in the travel retail industry also witnessed it, which is testimony to the close relationships he forged with those he trusted.
Michael opted for semi-retirement just over a year ago, although he remained involved with key accounts for Silhouette. He was a regular visitor to Silhouette's offices in Austria and he maintained many of the relationships that he had built up over the years.
A VERY POPULAR MAN
Having said all of this, Michael was no pushover. But the number of people who have contacted Christine after hearing the sad news is testimony to the respect they had for the man, as she explained: "Michael was a very popular guy. He was very black or white in his views, but it is amazing how many people have contacted me in the last week and the number of people who have said that their lives were richer for knowing him."
While this journalist would certainly count himself amongst them, it should also be said that Michael was also a hugely funny man with a great sense of humour, satire and an in-built ability to laugh at himself. He had enthusiasm and passion for anything he did both in his professional and private life.
For example, he was not only a member of the coveted Middlesex Cricket Club (MCC) and a fully qualified cricket umpire, but he also loved rugby. He would also rant for hours about his hatred for the last UK Government and over-paid professional footballers and it is little known that he only took up horse riding three years ago at the age of 71 after moving to his beloved Dorset countryside 10 years ago.
He adored animals and dogs and especially his three Beagles and recently travelled the country attending dog shows with Christine.
He also loved travelling and especially to the West Indies (when the cricket was on) and more recently to the Middle East where his step-son Paul Murray and wife Hannah now live with their family. He also adored his two other sons Oliver and Mark and until recently was very excited about plans to travel to Australia to see his younger son Mark graduate as a doctor.
Michael will be much missed by his lovely wife Christine and all of his family, by his many friends in the trade and also by me.
