Speakers for ARC 2010
By Doug Newhouse, 29 June 2010

The organisers of the third annual 2010 Airline Retail Conference (ARC) due to be held on Tuesday, July 20-21 at the UK's Sofitel London Heathrow hotel have confirmed that Ryanair's Deputy Ceo Michael Cawley is to deliver the opening address on how Ryanair became 'The Godfather of Ancillary Revenue'.

Cawley knows a bit about revenue generation, having made a E.900,000 profit earlier this month from exercising his Ryanair share options and immediately selling one million shares in the world's largest scheduled international airline (source: IATA). [His address will be all the more interesting considering the airline duty free and travel retail sales channel took the biggest knock in 2009 with a -9.1% fall in sales to $2,431.7m, according to Generation Research-Ed].

EXPLOSIVE GROWTH
Ryanair has been dubbed the 'The Godfather of Ancillary Revenue' by aviation consultancy IdeaWorks, with Cawley joining the low-cost carrier in 1997 as Chief Financial Officer and Commercial Director, before being appointed COO and Deputy Ceo in 2003.

Since that time, Ryanair's route network has increased from 12 routes to 1,100 and its passenger numbers have exploded from 3m to nearly 67m (year ending March 31, 2010) with revenues falling just short of E.3bn.

On June 1, Ryanair announced E.664m of ancillary revenues for the year to March 2010, accounting for 22% of the company's overall revenues.

The organisers say that the importance of generating ancillary revenue to inflight retail is one of the key themes of the conference, with four of the top five ancillary revenue earners - AirAsia, easyJet, Ryanair and Vueling - already signed up to attend.

OTHER AIRLINE SPEAKERS
Other confirmed speakers include easyJet Director Warwick Brady and Vueling Ceo Alex Cruz, along with executives from Lufthansa, American Airlines and United Airlines.

Commenting on the line up, Event Director Alex Vail said: "We are delighted Michael is opening ARC2010. He plays a pivotal role in growing inflight revenues at Ryanair, and brings a tremendous amount of inflight retail experience and wisdom".

The organisers say that in the last three years more than 700 delegates have attended the event from more than 25 countries, including the majority of the top 50 airlines representing an average of $1.7bn in inflight sales and they are optimistic that the 2010 event will be even bigger and better than before.
