ACI's 'Best Airport Awards'
By Doug Newhouse, 20 June 2010

The 6th Annual ACI Europe 'Best Airport Awards' were announced last week in Milan during the gala dinner of the 20th ACI Europe Annual Congress, with the awards aimed at recognising achievement in core activities, such as customer service, retail, security and environmental awareness.

The first award, recognising airports in the '1-5m passenger' category, went to Malta International Airport 'for its excellent and innovative entry, reflecting the airport's serious progress across the range of competition criteria'.

The winner of the '5-10m passenger' category was Lyon Airports, with judges said to be particularly impressed by its concrete commitments in the area of environmental awareness and its 'excellent approach' to relations with the local community.

This year's award in the '10-25m passenger' category went to Manchester Airport. The UK airport was selected by the jury because of its ability to 'add real substance' to everything it undertakes, with particular mention of its approach to airport security. Ultimately, it is the airport's 'passion for excellence in all that they do' that singled Manchester Airport out as the winner in this category.

BARCELONA WINS THE BIG ONE

This year's award in the 'over 25m passengers' category went to Barcelona Airport. The airport won praise from all of the judges for its magnificent new facilities, officially opened in the past year. Barcelona Airport's ambitious environmental investment plan also impressed the jury, along with its 'extremely valuable collaboration with disability groups'.

This year's awards also saw the introduction of a new award, the Eco-Innovation Award, which is awarded by the independent Advisory Board of Airport Carbon Accreditation. The award is aimed at highlighting outstanding environmental performance and an innovative approach to environmental management.

This year Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport were the joint winners.

[This years' judging panel comprised a well-respected group of independent experts, including the European Commission, EUROCONTROL and the European Disability Forum. ACI Europe counts more than 400 airports in 46 European countries among its membership and it says that this year's competition saw a high level of entries in each of the four categories].

Meanwhile, in separate news, Ad Rutten, COO of Schiphol Group was re-elected at the ACI Europe Annual Congress to lead ACI Europe for a second term as President.
