BA cabin crew union calls 7-day strikes
By Doug Newhouse, 12 March 2010

The British Airways cabin crew union Unite has announced that its members will take strike action for three days between March 20-23 and for a further four days from March 27, following the breakdown of talks between airline management and the union yesterday.

The union announced its decision this morning, although it has also promised that there will be no industrial action over the Easter holiday period.

Initially it looked as though BA was ready to make an offer to cabin crew and the union said that it would submit this to its members ahead of the first planned strike dates, but this offer has subsequently been withdrawn today.

The action is being taken after months of well-documented disputes between BA management and the 13,000-strong union over changes to contracts and reductions in the numbers of cabin crew on short and long-haul flights.

British Airways is hoping that temporary cabin crew - recruited and trained within the airline's other divisions - will be able to take up some of the slack and that some members of the union will not strike. The airline also has plans to bring more than 20 aircraft into the fleet on a temporary basis to try and run as many services as possible.

In a statement today, the Unite union's Assistant General Secretary and lead negotiator with British Airways Len McCluskey said: “Strikes are planned for March 20, 21 and 22 and further on March 27, 28, 29 and 30. There will be no strikes over the Easter period, as we already promised, but further industrial action will be called to take place after April 14 if the dispute has not been resolved."
