Swiss approval still awaited on arrivals shops
By Doug Newhouse, 12 March 2010
A report circulating today which suggests that Switzerland has approved arrival shops is not correct, with Zurich Airport confirming in the last hour that the long-standing proposal has yet to be put before the Swiss Parliament, let alone be passed. At the same time, a spokeswoman at Zurich said the airport does not expect any formal approval to be forthcoming before 2011 at the earliest.
The spokeswoman confirmed that Switzerland's Federal Council has given arrivals shops the green light and acknowledged that this is good news, but she added that this was just one stage in the process, albeit positive: "It still has to go through Parliament and there are several legislation factors that need to be changed with regard to liquor and tobacco.
"I can only speak for Zurich Airport, but we obviously hope it will be an expedient process, although we are not expecting anything to happen until 2011."
This position is wholly consistent with previous reports in TREND and The Travel Retail Business magazine, based on our various discussions and communications with the airport managements at both Zurich and Geneva during the last year.
