Áreas to open 10 stores at Malaga Airport
By Doug Newhouse, 12 March 2010

Specialist travel service company Áreas is to open 10 new stores over 1,300sq m in the new E.1.4bn ($1.9bn)international terminal which opens at Malaga Airport next Monday where the company is forecasting accumulated sales of E.55m ($75m) over the five-year concession period, plus the creation of 60 new jobs.

Áreas at Malaga Airport will feature renowned national and international brands such as National Geographic, Adidas, Adolfo Domínguez, Sibarium and Cottet.

"We are especially pleased and excited at the opening of these establishments," said Eligio Bianchi, Áreas General Manager for Distribution and Corporate.

"Malaga Airport is a new challenge for us in a strategic tourist location, where we will have the opportunity to demonstrate our experience and good management, because it is one of the most important airports in the peninsula. This concession boosts Áreas' presence in Malaga, where it already operates a coffee shop at the María Zambrano station and a service area in the Marbella highway."

Áreas says it offers customized solutions for all areas where it operates and this has also been the case at Pablo Picasso Malaga Airport, with a blend of concepts developed specifically for terminal, with renowned national and international brands.

ÁREAS' MIX OF STORES....
Áreas will operate a National Geographic store as well as a Cottet outlet. The latter eye-care group is opening its first store with Áreas. Also making its debut is Desire, a new concept created by Áreas specifically for this airport, featuring 'uniquely designed jewellery' and high-end imitation jewellery.

Áreas says there will also be an outlet called 'The Sweet Market' which is aimed at the large volume of English family passengers that use Malaga airport. This shop will consist of three outlets selling chocolates and candies.

In addition, Sibarium will showcase typical national products, along with a selection of national and international gastronomic delicatessen products and during the first days of operation at the new terminal, Sibarium will give away - while supplies last - a bottle of appellation contrôllée wine, oil, or honey, with proof of purchase of any product acquired at another Malaga airport Áreas shop.

In addition, Áreas is also opening Travel Mate, which is described as a traditional shop offering top brand accessories and travel products.

The company added: "In keeping with its policy of working with prestigious brands, Áreas brings to Malaga shops such as Adidas, with sports and outdoor articles, and Adolfo Domínguez, which after great success at the El Prat Barcelona airport now opens in Malaga its second outlet in a terminal, offering a selection of accessories for men and women."

Mathieu Herrero, Áreas Marketing Director said: "The responsibility for creating a commercial offer, in terms of shops, at the new Malaga airport terminal can only be successfully tackled in one way: knowing clients' specific needs and addressing them by combining agreements with the best and most well-known brands and the creation of exclusive shops to complement the product offering and make it unique."

Áreas currently manages over 219 catering establishments and shops in 20 Spanish airports. In addition to Áreas' new operation, Aldeasa is also set to open the largest retail space for a general store in any Spanish airport when the new terminal is opened next Monday. Aldeasa's new store will comprise 2,300sq m for its 'The Shop' concept and an additional 77sq m for its 'Express Shop'.

This new terminal will make Malaga the fourth-largest airport in Spain, comprising 270,000sq m in size.
