Aldeasa opens a second shop at Santiago
By Doug Newhouse, 11 March 2010

Showing continued resilience in difficult conditions, Aldeasa has managed to open a 609sq m shop in the arrivals zone within the international terminal at Santiago de Chile Airport, following the reopening of certain parts of the terminal after the terrible February 27 earthquake which claimed several hundred lives and caused massive damage to buildings - including the airport terminal.

The new shop opening follows the news last week that Aldeasa had resumed activities in its 310sq m shop in the domestic terminal, on the same day that the airport opened after the earthquake.

Once again, Aldeasa management has thanked its team in Chile, as well the close collaboration of the operator of SCL Terminal Aéreo Santiago S.A. and DGAC (Dirección General de Aviación Civil) to make this second shop opening possible in such a short period of time.

Aldeasa has been operating in Chile since 1995 and has a staff of 197 employees, of which 193 work in the 10 shops which Aldeasa operates in normal circumstances at Santiago de Chile and four in the shop at Concepcion airport. The operator now reports that both the domestic and international terminals at Santiago Airport are now open.

EARTHQUAKE SHIFTED EARTH'S ORBIT
Meanwhile, scientific and meteorological experts have revealed that the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Chile's coast was more than 500 times more powerful than the 7.0 quake that devastated Haiti. In fact it was so strong that they say that it not only shifted the Earth's orbit, but it also moved the city of Concepcion three metres (10 feet) to the west.

Scientists say that it also moved other parts of South America as far apart as the Falkland Islands, Fortaleza in Brazil and Buenos Aires. They say that the earthquake has now been recorded as the fifth most powerful to hit any part of the world since seismic measurements began.

According to aid agencies, the good news in Chile today is that more than 90% of homes in the disaster area are now reported to have had regular power and water supplies restored and food aid is reaching those that need it.
