MCM opens first China downtown boutique
By Doug Newhouse, 10 March 2010

Fast growing luxury leathergoods company MCM has had the initial soft opening of its first 69sq m stand alone 'duty free' boutique in China, at the new 3,000sq m Chongqing Duty Free Galleria in Chongqing in central-western China and MCM Global Travel Retail Director Gerry Munday says that the first customer bought three items within ten minutes of the doors opening on March 8 this week.

The boutique opening follows the opening of MCM's flagship store at Three on the Bund in Shanghai earlier this year and MCM also has a location at the Peninsula Hotel in Beijing, which opened in 2008.

Carrying a selection of MCM's Spring Summer 2010 Collection for women, the brand sits alongside other prestigious names, including Bally, Bvlgari (opening end of March), Montblanc, Dolce & Gabanna, Coach and Gucci.

Gerry Munday said: "MCM as a brand is growing strongly in China with sales increasing season on season, which is very encouraging. This new downtown boutique presents us with a fabulous opportunity to further promote the brand in the region and we are delighted with the smooth running set up and support that we have been given."

The company says that the Chongqing Duty Free Galleria offers travellers a wide range of luxury and premium goods, including a perfumes and cosmetics area; wine and Champagne cellar; VIP lounge; luxury watch boutique; and a homeware section, with brands such as Fissler and WMH. In addition, there is an electronics and sunglasses outlet with all luxury brands on offer, including Gucci, Prada and Versace. The formal grand opening takes place at the end of March.

Meanwhile, within China, MCM also has personalized shop-in-shops at Beijing Capital International Airport T3 and Shanghai Pudong International Airport T2 through Sunrise Duty Free. Munday said: "We are expecting to open further travel retail locations in China this year and, on the domestic market, we expect to add another 35 locations by the end of 2011."
