Commission loses BAA 'break up' appeal

The UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal this week denied an appeal by the UK's Competition Commission (CC) to force airports operator BAA to sell more of its airports after the CC tried to have its original ruling upheld. This was successfully appealed by BAA last December.
The Competition Commission originally ordered BAA to sell one more London airport in Stansted and either Edinburgh or Glasgow, but this would appear to be firmly off the agenda following the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal decision.
BAA sold off Gatwick Airport late last year as part of the appeasement process and lost considerable revenue in a market environment that was hardly perfect.
But despite this week's ruling, the Competition Commission has indicated that it will continue its agenda that BAA should sell off two more airports, although this is unlikely to be on any agenda again until late 2011.
