Judge orders border store to be demolished
By Doug Newhouse, 8 February 2010

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has won a lawsuit against the Ambassador Bridge Company (The Detroit International Bridge Company/DIBC) after a Wayne County Circuit Court agreed that the latter’s duty free border store was illegally built on City of Detroit property.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Prentice Edwards has now given DIBC Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun 21 days to appoint a manager or agent to present a timetable for dismantling and removing the store.

The dispute between MDOT and the Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun has been brewing for around a year, with the MDOT originally alleging that the construction of the store was in breach of the design terms of the Gateway Project.

This project comprises a massive $230m roadway improvement programme aimed at creating more efficient approaches to the suspension bridge, which links Detroit in Michigan with Windsor in Ontario on the Canadian side.

The DIBC is the sole owner and operator of the portion of the Ambassador Bridge that is located in the State of Michigan in Detroit.
