Schiphol and Kappé sign five-year contract
By Doug Newhouse, 1 February 2010
Coinciding with its 60th anniversary, Kappé has announced today that it has signed a new five-year contract with Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to operate beauty, drugstore and sunglasses stores at Schiphol World Avenue. This brings to an end previous 'differences of opinion' over the future of the concession.
Both Schiphol Amsterdam Airport and Kappé say they are 'delighted' that a new agreement has been reached in an open and respectful manner and through this agreement both parties have agreed on a joint commitment to serve passengers in a professional and guest-friendly way.
Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of the Schiphol Group Maarten de Groof said at the ceremony at the head office of Kappé: "We congratulate Kappé on its 60th anniversary. Having started at the airport as a hairdressing salon that subsequently expanded to include the sale of tax-free perfume products, today - more than half a century later - Kappé is a multifaceted international enterprise that offers a valued service for our passengers.
"The signing of the new contract seals our ongoing partnership, and we look forward to continue building an inspiring and welcoming AirportCity with a wide range of products and services to meet the needs of 40-50 million passengers each year."
The owner of Kappé Jacques Parson said he was very proud and honoured to sign this agreement on the 60th anniversary of the family company. He said the continuation of the business partnership is based on a wonderful history of Kappé at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. Jacques Parson also paid tribute to his staff and other stakeholders who make the business such an ongoing success.
Comment: This latest news from The Netherlands would appear to bring a long-running difference of views to an end between Kappé and the Schiphol Group and it is no coincidence that it follows Kappé's legal victory last May. In that instance a Dutch court found in favour of Kappé in a case where the Schiphol Group was effectively trying to end and take over the operator's long tenure of its perfume and cosmetics business at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
At that time, the judge found that there were no reasonable grounds for terminating the operator's concession, even though its five-year contract extension had long expired. Under Dutch law Kappé would have had to be heavily compensated if the Schiphol Group had taken over this business.
The case was originally tabled under the previous commercial management of the Business Area Consumers after Kappé was 'informed' nearly two years ago that Schiphol Airport Retail B.V. wanted to self operate the perfume and cosmetics operation - believed to be worth more than E.100m ($139m) a year in sales.
Owner Jacques Parson was told (by former Senior Vice President, Business Area Consumers Dick Flink) that it was Schiphol's intention to incorporate the business into its Schiphol Airport Retail B.V. operation in the same way that it took over the KLM duty free liquor and tobacco operation several years ago.
At that time, Parson is believed to have told Schiphol management that if it wanted to take the concession back then it would have to pay for the privilege, but no sale price was ever agreed.
