Fiji gets deadly serious with big tourism drive
By Doug Newhouse, 29 December 2009

Retail and commercial trading hours have been extended with immediate effect throughout Fiji in an effort to boost tourist spending, ahead of the introduction of next February's value added tax refund scheme and the impending zero VAT rating on watches, jewellery, perfumes and cosmetics - effectively creating Fiji's first 'downtown' duty free marketplace.

Trading hours for all commercial outlets have now been extended to 21.00 across all seven days of the week to allow consumers more time for shopping and liquor trading hours have been relaxed, allowing hotels to sell liquor 24/7, pubs from 11.00am-01.00am and restaurants from 11.00am until midnight. Nightclubs also have extended hours.

Fiji's Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the new trading hours will bring huge benefits to the tourism sector and to Fiji's economy, along with the extended liquor retail hours and the VAT reclaim scheme.

Leading Fiji domestic and duty free retailer Tappoo Ltd is already well positioned to take advantage of these new rules, just over two weeks after opening its six-storey $25m Tappoo City department store in Suva.

According to Tappoo Executive Chairman Kanti Tappoo, the store has been very well received by tourists and locals, comprising around 24,000sq ft and it is well placed to take advantage of the savings that it will be able to offer when the government's VAT zero rating scheme is applied in February 2010 on popular tourist items such as watches, jewellery, perfumes and cosmetics.

Next February, all tourists spending more than $500 on goods in Fiji will be eligible to reclaim the 12.5% VAT element back under the new Tourist VAT Refund Scheme.

Tappoo Duty Free Executive Chairman and Ceo Kanti Tappoo has already welcomed these developments and he told the local Fiji television programme 'Talk Business' that while he is expecting 'a modest' recovery in the economy of the country in 2010, he believes that Fiji has actually emerged from 2009 'relatively well' considering the impact of the global financial crisis on other countries.

He told the programme that he was also pleased with the reception to the company's new Tappoo City department store and he was also impressed that the new store is almost identical in reality to the designs originally created five years ago.

Interestingly, the Tappoo company has also included certain merchandise into Tappoo City that it has successfully tested at its Nadi Airport duty free operation.
