US campaign website urges UK boycott
By Doug Newhouse, 24 August 2009
A new campaign has started in the US which is urging an American travel boycott on Scotland, plus a boycott on buying all British/Scottish products - including whisky. This is in response to the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, which US relatives and friends of victims have described as 'outrageous', considering the 270 lives that were lost in 1988.
A new website - www.boycottscotland.com - is supporting and promoting the boycotts. On its welcome page it states: "Unless the Scottish government rescinds this decision to release al-Megrahi, and if the British Parliament continues to avoid intervening in the matter, we urge all Americans to protest this action by boycotting the United Kingdom and Scotland in full. Don't travel to Scotland or do business there (or in the United Kingdom in general) and don't buy any British or Scottish products."
While the website says that it is not attacking Scottish or UK people in general, it says that the only way to make politicians listen is to make an impact on trade and it appears to be well organised.
The campaign is also making some business leaders nervous, especially considering that the US is the biggest single national originating market for tourism in Scotland, accounting for 21% of its overseas spend, or £260m ($372m) last year.
It should be said here that Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi still mainatains his innocence to this day.
