Onboard signs with Spanair/Newrest
By Doug Newhouse, 21 March 2009

Onboard Retail Solutions is to supply its onboard retail technology to Spanair, following an agreement between the airline and specialised catering company Newrest, with whom Onboard has an ongoing business partnership.

Newrest has recently signed a total concession contract with Spanair to supply both Buy-on-Board and F&B services. Newrest is already using Onboard’s onBOS BackOffice system in order to manage Spanair’s complete onboard retail operation. The inflight pos software, onPOS, will now be introduced onto Spanair’s flights within the next few months, following 'an intensive crew training programme'.

As part of the contract, Onboard will provide support and maintenance services from its Bristol headquarters for both software and hardware being used by Spanair. In addition, Spanair is able to tap into all data via reliable and secure 24/7 internet access to Onboard’s Bristol DataCenter.

Newrest (via its Gusto+ and Venta a Bordo divisions) and Onboard has been successfully running a similar business formula for some years with Air Europa and both parties say they are confident that the Spanair contract will prove equally effective and lucrative for the airline.

Onboard’s CEO Thomas Drohan said: "We have an excellent working relationship with Newrest and are delighted to have further expanded Onboard’s business with this Spanair contract. We’re confident that the airline will benefit significantly in terms of improved ancillary revenue as a result."

Newrest’s Purchasing Director Vicente Sarañana added: "Based on our excellent experience with Onboard Retail Solutions’ systems used by Air Europa, the company was a natural choice for the Spanair contract. We are already successfully using the onBOS BackOffice system and are now in final preparations for introducing the system onboard."
