Zurich makes profit of $106m
By Doug Newhouse, 19 March 2009

Unique (Flughafen Zürich AG) has reported a net profit decline of 7.2% to Swf.121.3m ($106.2m) for its full financial year, compared with Swf.130.7m ($114.5m) in 2007, although the airport handled 6.6% more passengers and total revenue rose by 6.5% to Swf.855.1m ($749.1m). Non-aviation revenue also rose by 7.3% to Swf.329.4m ($288.5m).

In a statement today the airport said: "The financial year 2008 was characterized by a strong passenger growth during the first nine months. In the last quarter of 2008, the worldwide economic slowdown became noticeable also at our airport. Despite this weakened economic situation passenger figures for the whole year rose over proportional to the European benchmark by 6.6% to 22.1m. Local passengers increased by 4.5% to 14.3m. The transfer share was 35.2% in 2008 (previous year: 33.8%). Movements rose by 2.4% to 274,991."

Zurich's management said that the turnover of Swf.855.1m ($749.1m) saw the aviation sector generate 61.5% and the non-aviation sector the balance. Revenue in the aviation segment rose in 2008 by 6% to Swf.525.7m ($460.4m).

Revenue in the non-aviation segment rose by 7.3% to Swf.329.4m ($288.5m) and this was partly due to the enlargement of the landside Shopping Centre, including 13 new units.

In terms of outlook, the airport management says that the difficult global situation is expected to have a negative impact on traffic figures in the current year and Unique (Flughafen Zürich AG) expects a passenger decrease of around 3% to 5%, whereas the local passenger segment is expected to show an over-proportional decrease.
