Tappoo Group wins two prestigious awards
By Doug Newhouse, 13 February 2009

The Tappoo Group of Companies reports today that it has been recognised with the Lifetime Achievement and Excellence in Shopping awards at the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards 2008 held at the Sheraton Fiji Resort last week.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the company's Group Chairman Kanti Tappoo by the Honourable Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama and Tappoo's Executive Director Kaushal Tappoo said the retailer is 'very proud and delighted to have won these awards."

The citation accompanying the Lifetime Achievement Award reads: "The Award is for an individual that has made great achievement in establishing tourism business, as well as contributing to community development."

The company also received the award for General Tourism Services - including shopping. The awards reflect Tappoo's growing businesses in Fiji since the 1960s and it now counts some 1,000 employees throughout Fiji, 50 retail stores and various other investments in the tourism sectors.

Tappoo now operates stores in Sigatoka, Nadi and Suva and it is currently building a new multi-storey building in Suva.

Tappoo Group Chairman Kanti Tappoo told TREND last month that it continues to expand, despite all of the doom and gloom being forecast worldwide and it is very excited about two ongoing developments this year in particular: "First is the eagerly awaited opening of Tappoo City Suva, our flagship shopping complex, in mid 2009. This will be truly world class and by far the best store in Fiji and we believe will compare very favourably to Australia's and New Zealand's best stores.

"It is a six-storey complex right in the heart of Suva city. There will be three levels of Tappoo Department store, one level of Specialty stores and international brand name food outlets and two levels of offices. Second is the complete refurbishment of our Nadi Airport Departure store."

Besides its duty free interests, Tappoo has also built significant wholesale interests in Fiji, with a big supply business to local hotels. It is also involved in the hotel business with a joint venture with the Accor Group and it is also very involved with charitable community projects.
