Executives of LEE CLOTHING voted Wednesday to change the company's name, following a two-month long dispute.
The vote concluded a closed-door debate between stakeholders and the descendants of Henry David Lee - the company's 1889 founder - over whether it’s appropriate for LEE to give the impression that it is honoring the Confederate General of the same name.
In an interview with TREND, Chief Public Relations Officer Samuel N. Owflayk stated: "The fact that the company is named after our founder and not Robert E. Lee is irrelevant. It's how the name makes people feel - that's what's important." Owflayk continued "...the offensiveness associated with the name 'Lee' is too triggering to some of our customers and may lead to unnecessary mental anguish..."
The board will meet again in the coming weeks to decide upon a new name. Unconfirmed sources close to the matter have reported that the company is test-marketing names such as "Dyverse," "2gether," and "I Identify As Denim."
